Belìce punto Zero
curated by Sandro Scalia, Mario Mattia, Maria Donata Napoli
Belìce punto Zero compares photographic images documenting the disastrous earthquake that struck the valley of Belìce in 1968, with those that a number of young photographers –Cantarero, Cremone, Poma, Zarba, Peloso – have taken in the very same places, after more than fifty years, under the guidance of Sandro Scalia. Photography, beyond its aestheticism, uncompromisingly documents the destruction in the past and present. The people, paradoxically, disappear in the photos from the present day, the memory and the story of the present are entrusted to the remains, the fragments, the perspective and the detail.
Belìce punto Zero is a photography book published by the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia in collaboration with the Accademia di Belle Arti in Palermo, Catania University (Università degli Studi di Catania), the Central Library of the Sicily Region and with the support of CRESM. The project is curated by Mario Mattia, Maria Donata Napoli and Sandro Scalia.
