by Stefano De Luigi and Michela Battaglia
Are we neutral spectators or oblivious hostages? Babel was born from this question. From the impression that we are all like coloured pieces of chalk, writing a story we are not conscious of. Through the layering of advertising pictures and propaganda photos, Stefano De Luigi and Michela Battaglia gave birth to a set of images that combine contrasting and apparently antithetic messages: a portrait of the war which is currently being fought between the Western civilisation, which is suffering from a loss of identity and a self-declared Caliphate, which proposes a whole array of radical moral values, distorting one of the world’s most widespread religions.
Stefano De Luigi (Cologne, 1964) is a member of VII agency since 2008 and lives in Paris. He has won four World Press Photo awards in different categories (1998-2007-2010- 2011).
Michela Battaglia (Palermo 1982) lived in New York, where she graduated from the International Center of Photography (ICP). Her works have been exhibited both in Italy and abroad. She now lives in Milan.
